AUBURN — As soon as he entered the game, Manasse Miguel had a terrific opportunity.

Miguel headed a perfectly placed corner kick from Abdirauf Hersi into the corner of the net to give the Lewiston boys soccer team a 1-0 win over Edward Little on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m not going to lie; I was really hungry. I wanted to score. The entire bench was hungry for a score,” Miguel said. “I just got in and did what I had to do to score.”

Added Hersi: “There’s a reason why (Miguel) comes in during the last five minutes. He’s going to get those goals. He comes in and he scores.”

Miguel’s header with 5:30 left in the second half was the only shot on goal for Lewiston (4-1-1). Until then, the game seem destined for overtime, with most of the action at midfield and only two shots on goal by Edward Little (2-3-1).

Lewiston went 3-0 this week and outscored opponents 17-0.

How did they get there?

Patience. Edward Little did an excellent job of turning away most of Lewiston’s forward momentum, until the final minutes.

The Red Eddies had one shot on goal in each half, with their closest chance coming at the 20-minute mark. Lewiston goalie Will Diamond-Stanic made a diving save.

Key moment

Miguel got credit for the goal, but Hersi’s corner kick created it. His pass sailed over the heads of several players battling for position by the goal and went to Miguel in the far-left corner.

“I saw the other team wasn’t paying attention off the corner,” Hersi said. “I just put it out there with my left foot and (Miguel) put it in.”

They said it

“I’m sure guys were a little bit gassed, but we found a way to win. EL is a good team. Our first 20 minutes, we played our brand of ball. The second 20, we got caught up in the ping-pong king of (game). Once we settled down, I think they had some tired legs, but they held their composure, which I was really impressed with.” — Lewiston coach Dan Gish

“This is our fourth straight game where we’ve played for a better result than we’ve gotten. We’re kind of getting a little tired of silver linings at this point. Losing 1-0 or 5-0 isn’t a big difference as it plays to standings, but we need to get some results.” — Edward Little coach Max Thompson
