Chris Lang passed for two touchdowns, Damien Jones rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown, and the University of New England matched its best football start in school history with a third straight win Saturday, 35-8 over VTSU Castleton in Castleton, Vermont.
UNE opened the scoring just 1:35 into the game with a 5-yard pass from Lang to Gavin Anderson. The duo connected again for a 2-point conversion that made it 8-0.
Jhai Vellon extended the lead when he returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. Jones added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Anthony Lacapru’s 19-yard field goal just before halftime put the Nor’easters ahead 25-0.
Lang found Berto Zepeda for a 41-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Lacapru hit a 27-yard field goal in the fourth.
Lang was 15 of 25 for 242 yards. Zepeda finished with 161 yards on six catches.
MIDDLEBURY 31, BOWDOIN 10: The Panthers (1-1) scored 21 points in the second half to pull away and beat the Polar Bears (0-2) in Middlebury, Vermont.
Brian Moran completed 18 of 27 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown for Middlebury. Connor McClellan rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns, and Caleb Smith added a 5-yard TD run.
Caden Perry kicked a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter for Bowdoin and Soren Hummel scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth.
TRINITY 30, BATES 13: The Bantams (1-1) jumped out to a 27-0 lead and beat the Bobcats (1-1) in Hartford, Connecticut.
Nolan O’Brien caught a 12-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 79 yards for a score in the first quarter. Jackson Tosone added a 9-yard run in the second quarter, and O’Brien scored his third touchdown on a 53-yard reception from Jaxon Carroll in the third quarter. O’Brien caught nine passes for 140 yards.
Ryan Lynskey rushed 22 times for 65 yards and scored twice for Bates.
WILLIAMS 38, COLBY 0: Owen Johansen rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two, leading the Ephs (2-0) past the Mules (1-1) in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Miles Drake led Colby with 56 yards rushing and 114 passing. He was sacked five times and intercepted twice.
WPI 15, HUSSON 13: Nathan Napier kicked a 35-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining to give the Engineers (1-2) a win over the Eagles (1-2) in Bangor.
The late field goal spoiled Husson’s comeback from a 12-0 halftime deficit. Max Clark threw two touchdowns passes to Cam Holmes – 22 yards in the third quarter and 9 yards early in the fourth.
Clark was 20 of 37 for 284 yards but was intercepted three times.
NORWICH 63, MAINE MARITIME 0: The Mariners (0-2) were outgained 479-80 and fell behind 42-0 in the first half of a loss to the Cadets (1-2) in Norwich, Vermont.
Norwich quarterback Landon Beecher was 8 of 10 passing for 160 yards and four touchdowns, all to different receivers.
