HOULTON, Maine (AP) — Maine police say a Canadian national who threatened a bus with a fake detonator switch has been arrested in Houlton, near the Canadian border.

Police say 50-year-old Daniel Thomas Maccabee surrendered just before dawn Thursday as a tactical squad prepared to fire tear gas into the bus.

Police say Maccabee began making threats before the bus reached an Irving gas station Wednesday night in Houlton. The driver and seven passengers left, leaving only Maccabee on the bus.

Houlton Police Chief Butch says that during the nine-hour episode, Maccabee claimed to have a detonator switch, which was later determined to be a video game controller. Maccabee claimed he wanted asylum in Canada.

Asselin says Maccabee’s last known address was in Madison, Wis. He’s charged with assault, aggravated reckless conduct and terrorizing.
