FRANKFORT, Maine — The mother of a 7-month-old girl found her daughter mauled to death by the family’s Rottweiler on Tuesday afternoon in the living room of their home on Town Hill Road, and the Maine State Police are investigating.
“The child’s mother called 911 saying the dog had attacked her daughter,” Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Wednesday.
An autopsy on the body of Annabelle Mitchell is scheduled to take place Wednesday at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
The dog was shot to death by a Waldo County Sheriff’s Department deputy Tuesday at the request of the child’s father, John Mitchell, McCausland said.
The child was home with her mother, Katrina Mitchell, and a 2½-year-old brother at the time of the attack. A team of state police detectives spent the night inside the house gathering evidence and conducting interviews, McCausland said.
Further examination will also be conducted on the dog, he added.
