100 years ago,1911

At a meeting of the local autoists held at the Nelke and Partridge garage recently, City Marshals Harry W. Rowe of Auburn and Arsene Cailler of Lewiston were present and gave their views of what the speed limit should be. Marshal Rowe believed that between the bridge and the corner of Court and Pleasant streets, 15 miles an hour was not excessive, while in Lewiston, on Main and Lisbon streets, Marshal Cailler believed that the limit should be 8 miles an hour.

50 years ago, 1961

Geiger Bros. publishing company of Lewiston yesterday announced plans to build a $250,000 addition with ground-breaking ceremonies scheduled Monday morning.

The new addition will relieve congestion in the present factory and office areas and will provide more storage space in addition to housing the company’s new offset printing department, which includes a new, two-color offset press — reportedly the first of its kind in the state.

25 years ago, 1986

One of the last appearances Bruce Hangen will make as conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra before moving on to Omaha will be on the shore of Lake Auburn this summer.

Following a successful debut last year, the 1986 Festival by the Lake will be held July 26 on the campus of Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

Adding to this year’s event will be the popular folk group Schooner Fare, which will be making its first appearance with an orchestra.
