LEWISTON — University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Kaitlyn Bartlett was the hero of both games in a doubleheader sweep over Bates in a softball doubleheader Monday.

The Beavers won the opener, 8-5, on the strength of a grand slam by Bartlett, then took Game 2 3-0 with a complete-game shutout authored by Bartlett.

Bartlett drove in five runs in the opener, while McKell Barnes added an RBI single for the Beavers (9-9).

Emma Vaillaincourt earned the win despite allowing seven hits and issuing six walks. Kristen Finn took the loss, allowing the Beavers nine hits and three walks while striking out seven.

In the second game, Bartlett limited Bates (5-9) to five hits and one walk while striking out three in a complete-game shutout. She outdueled Bates sophomore Caroline Gattuso, who allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Baseball

UMF, Lyndon split pair

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team collected in 8-1 victory in the opener, but fell 3-2 in the second game, to split with Lyndon State College in North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball action.

In the opener, Brandon Gallagher tossed a four-hitter and Dale Winchenbach singled twice, scored three times and drove in two runs to lead UMF to the 8-1 win over the Hornets.

Matt Levine also singled twice for the Beavers, with Jack MacVane clubbing a double. Winchenbach and Zach Keene each singled home a run for UMF (4-17) .

In game two, the Hornets (6-17) scored on a grounder in the sixth to slip past the Beavers 3-2. Jeremy Schichtle finished the complete-game victory by allowing just one UMF baserunner over the final two innings. Casey Ashey hurled a complete game in the loss with four hits allowed, six walks and four Ks.

Bates 5, Thomas 0

LEWISTON — Bates received its second outstanding pitching performance in as many days, shutting out Thomas College, 5-0, at Leahey Field for the Bobcats’ third straight win.

Sophomore righthander Michael Spinosa threw seven innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out six.

Noah Lynd, McGregor and senior Gordy Webb hit three straight RBI singles in the sixth to give Bates (10-12) a 3-0 lead. Bates added to the lead in the seventh on a two-run single by Pat Murphy.
