NORWAY — The Select Board will hold a special town meeting Thursday, Sept. 15, to deal with an overdraft of the insurance account.
The $15,364.43 deficit was caused by an increase in general liability insurance and workers’ compensation premiums, which were received after the budget was completed.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Municipal Building at 19 Danforth St., prior to the board’s regular meeting.
In other business last week, the board approved a tax rate of $14.10 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The rate is lower than last year’s $17.45. Town assessor Natalie Andrews explained that the lower rate is due to an adjustment she made to town property values to keep the town’s ratio above 90% of current market values. Due to the real estate market, total property value in town has risen from $446.92 million to $530.45 million.
Andrews, who is leaving to become town manager in Bethel, said she would be available to talk to individual taxpayers if they have questions about their tax bill.
The board accepted a $120 donation from Chad Phillips to support the electric vehicle charging station in Longley Square. The board also accepted a $100 donation from Roland Kearley and Roxanne Ames in support of the Police Department’s K-9 unit. A criminal forfeiture of a 9 mm Jimenez handgun from the Office of the Attorney General was also accepted by the board.
Selectmen approved the appointments of Keagan McDonough to the Norway Paris Solid Waste Board and Kristina Kelley to the Board of Appeals.
Community Concepts approached the board about installing a Wi-Fi hot spot in Longley Square. A grant will pay for the equipment and installation for the next three years. Internet service will be paid by sponsors through Downtown Norway.
The broadband service will have a range of 150 meters and users will be able to stay on the site for up to eight hours, but safeguards will be in place to prevent a nearby business or resident from using it for their personal internet service. The board unanimously approved the plan.
Town Manager Dennis Lajoie submitted an updated job description for his position to the board for review. Lajoie is planning to retire at the end of the year.
