Frankie Lally had her hands full this spring.

Edward Little’s multi-sport star was coming off a solid senior season in basketball for the Red Eddies, and immediately began training for her spring sports.

Yes, that’s sports, plural.

Lally is an all-star track and field athlete, and also spent time with the school’s tennis team, earning accolades for both endeavors.

Her prowess on the courts manifested itself during the annual state singles tournament this season.

A star in a team setting as EL’s top singles player, Lally earned the top seed at the regional singles qualifier, breezed through those matches and waited as the MPA posted the seeds for the main tourney.

Perhaps a lesser-known entity to the state’s tennis community at large, Lally entered the main draw as the No. 12 seed, in the draw with No. 5 seed Jenna Selander of Caribou.

First, Lally dispatched an exhausted Sara Lacroix of Oak Hill after Lacroix weathered a four-hour match in the opening round, while Selander edged Becca Lessard, Lewiston’s No. 3 singles player in her draw, setting up the predicted 5-12 showdown during the following session — a session Lally nearly didn’t make thanks to a scheduled class trip to Boston.

After an opening-set win and a 4-1 lead in the second set, Lally started to fade.

“(Selander) was down 1-4, what more did she have to lose.” Lally said after the match. “She was also down a set, so she started wailing it. She started coming to net, I couldn’t find the right lob to get it over her head and I couldn’t hit the right passers they just went right to her.”

Selander rallied to win the second set, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, before Lally dug deep and started her charge back.

“I think she kind of did the same thing I did in the second set and just tensed up,” Lally said. “She didn’t come to net as much, so I tried to keep her moving.”

Lally completed the comeback win and advanced to the quarterfinals, where she ultimately fell to No. 4 Analise Kump of Falmouth.

“It made that decision worthwhile, that’s for sure,” Lally said.

For her ability to juggle an intense athletic workload, for the fact that she advanced through to the quarterfinals in this year’s singles tourney, and for the fact that Lally exhibited tenacity, grit and skill beyond that of her competitors, she is the 2011 Sun Journal All-Region girls’ tennis player of the year.
