100 Years Ago: 1922

A Boston girl riding horseback from Rangeley to her home in Massachusetts, made a short stop-over in Auburn Friday. She said she had been spending the summer in Rangeley Lakes, had fallen in love with the horse and bought it to take home with her.

50 Years Ago: 1972

A recent oil spill in Casco Bay resulted in a collection of piles of oil soaked seaweed, hay, bottles and sand. A Gray firm  involved in the burning of sludge oil, was contracted  to burn the oil soaked debris after environmentalists prevented them from dumping it in the ground.

The Harry Nason Co. of Auburn. headed by master oil mechanic and electrician Larry Morin, is in charge of building the necessary equipment for burning the debris without causing further harm to the environment.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The YWCA Evergreens Club will meet at noon Friday. Sept.5, for the first lunch meeting and program of the season. The speaker will be Chris Schario, artistic director of the Public Theater in Lewiston, who will talk about the upcoming season and answer questions. Current and potential members are invited.
