EUSTIS — Wind Power for ME and the Maine Renewable Energy Association applaud the Environmental Business Council of New England’s selection of TransCanada’s Kibby Wind Power Project as this year’s winner of the Outstanding Environmental — Energy Achievement Award.

The company’s commitment to environmental stewardship in the development, design and construction of the project also led to them becoming the first company to be certified under the U.S.-based Sustainable Forestry Initiative, an independent nonprofit organization, for its effort in protecting habitat and wildlife. In addition to protecting nearby ridge lines from wind development, TransCanada also invested $500,000 toward the protection of the Grafton Loop hiking trail.

The Kibby Wind project — New England’s largest wind power project — was completed on Nov. 1, 2010. The 132 megawatt facility has the capacity to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 50,000 homes each year.
