100 Years Ago: 1923

A sleigh loaded with about eight bushels of potatoes got stalled on the snowless ground at Main and Lisbon Street Tuesday morning. The effort of one white horse plus the efforts of one policeman and three passersby got the sleigh out of its difficulty after five minutes.

50 Years Ago: 1973

The Auburn Art Club will hold its monthly meeting at the Kate J. Anthony House at 2:30 Monday afternoon Jan. 3.

Emmett Stewart, manager of Loring Studios branch in Lewiston will provide the program, speaking on “The Art of Photography.”

Hostesses for the afternoon will be Mrs. Alfred N. Savignano, Mrs. Richard C. Buerhaus, Mrs. Ronald S. Potts, and Mrs. William A. Greenleaf.

25 Years Ago: 1998

The first baby born in the Twin Cities in 1998 is 20-inch-long Jacob Allyn Marshall, the son of Kristina and Joseph Marshall of Otisfield.

“He makes a lot of little squeaky noises,” said his mother, who knows about such things, having birthed three other children: Tim, 15; Kelley, 4; and Joey, 8.

Jacob was delivered at Central Maine Medical Center by Caesarean section at about 6:30 on New Year’s morning. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

The baby had been scheduled for delivery on Jan. 8 but decided to come early, said his mother.

The kids are very excited and can hardly wait for us to bring him home on either Saturday or Sunday,” said Kristina. “What a way to start off the new year, with a precious, perfect, healthy baby.”

The newborn’s grandparents live in Berkley, Mass. His paternal grandmother is Carolyn Marshall; his maternal grandfather is Joseph Coates.

“They live practically across the street from each other,” said the child’s mother.
