PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — An autopsy is planned on the body of a 41-year-old man shot dead on the sidewalk of a well-traveled street in Maine’s largest city, Portland.

Portland police say people reported hearing gunshots around 4:30 a.m. Monday and seeing a man run from behind an apartment house on Massachusetts Avenue and across outer Congress Street before collapsing. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

News reports identified the victim as Allen MacLean. The Tuesday autopsy is expected to confirm the identity of the victim so the name can be released officially.

The Portland Press Herald says police are seeking to identify people who attended a party at an apartment near the location where the shooting occurred.

Police haven’t publicly speculated on a motive.
