AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union has announced the winners of its $2,000 annual scholarship for 2011. The scholarship is available to eligible college freshman from the Androscoggin County area who are interested in studying art or literature. The scholarship committee includes Marguerite Powers, Barbara Randall and Melanie Ness.
The first recipient of a $1,000 scholarship is Brenna Rasmussen, a 2011 graduate of Edward Little High School. She will attend Ursinus College in Collegville, Pa., and plans a career in medicine. Rasmussen is the daughter of Margaret O’Donnell and John Rasmussen. While at ELHS, she was a volunteer for Teens with Hearts for Hospice, Kick Off Mentor at ELHS, East Auburn Community Unit, Special Olympics and the Woman’s Literary Union. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and at the end of her junior year, she was invited to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine where she was a scholar at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The second recipient of a $1,000 scholarship is Kelsey Philbrick, also a 2011 graduate of Edward Little High School and the daughter of Lynelle and Daniel Philbrick. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and was active in Kiddie Night Bowling, Portland Youth and Wind Ensemble, jazz band, show choir, pep band and marching band. She is also a member of the Southern Youth Wind Ensemble. She plans to attend University of Maine at Orono. Her career plans are to be a professional photographer. She plans to pursue the study of photography and journalism in college.
Part of the Union’s mission is to further the intellectual, cultural and educational advancement of its members and the community. They have bimonthly meetings at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St., on varying subjects, the second Thursday of each month at 2 p.m., and the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. These meetings are open to the public and new members are welcome.
