Bonnie Lounsbury says we’ve been blessed with clean water and prime farmland (“Protect Auburn’s resources with Harmon,” Oct. 12).
I feel, had she been involved with watershed management the last six years, she might now realize prime farmland and logging practices in the Lake Auburn watershed have contributed greatly to water quality issues brought about by excessive rain events.
Bonnie and others might also had gained the insight that the highly knowledgeable “watershed ad hoc committee” sent its recommendations to the Auburn Water District and Lewiston Water Division, stating it recommends the adoption of the zoning amendments “for the protection of Lake Auburn.” It was a committee made up of Auburn, Turner and Lewiston officials.
For 18 months people in this newspaper have been saying how Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque and his minions want to destroy the lake, make money, poison our water, etc. But essentially the same scientific based standards my mayor and I, along with dozens of committee members and staff, advocated for are now essential for the protection of our drinking water.
The only blessing here is the recent approval from the State Drinking Water Program and its endorsements to the city ordinance changes to ensure our waiver of filtration remains intact.
I wish Mr. Harmon the best of luck catching up.
Dan Bilodeau, Auburn
