Coach Jim Montgomery sent an early message to Jake DeBrusk after the forward was a healthy scratch for the Bruins’ 4-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. DeBrusk was late to a team meeting, which prompted the move.
He returned to the lineup Sunday and had an assist in Boston’s 3-1 win over the Anaheim Duck.
Montgomery revealed what his message was to DeBrusk upon inserting him back into game action.
“Yesterday is over with. We worry about today and he gets a chance here to come back and help us win hockey games,” Montgomery said prior to Sunday’s game. “I thought he handled it well. He handled it like a pro.”
DeBrusk was scratched under Bruce Cassidy during the 2020-21 season, but he couldn’t quite find a groove. He responded well to the benching and had a chance to play on the top line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. There he began to play a bit better and became a mainstay on the top line last year in Montgomery’s first year as coach.
Benching DeBrusk so early in the season was certainly a statement made by Montgomery. But he didn’t want it to be seen as him sending a message to the younger players on the team. Instead, he wants his players to know there’s standards that he expects them to meet.
“There’s just a standard that we believe in here. When that standard isn’t met, there’s repercussions,” he said. “But yesterday is over with. It’s a new day and we’re moving forward.”
The Bruins, who have won their first five games, end their four-game trip with a game Tuesday night at Chicago.
JETS: Coach Rick Bowness is taking a leave of absence after his wife had a seizure, the Jets said.
Judy Bowness remains in a hospital for testing after having a seizure on Sunday night, the team said.
Associate coach Scott Arniel will serve as interim head coach in his absence. The Jets are off to a 2-3 start to the season and play Tuesday against the visiting St. Louis Blues.
Bowness is entering his second season with the Jets. He led them to a 46-33-3 record and a playoff berth last season when Winnipeg was eliminated in five games in the first round by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights.
He coached the Dallas Stars to the 2020 Stanley Cup final, where they lost in six games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Bowness coached the AHL Maine Mariners for two seasons, 1989-90 and ’90-91 before being promoted to Boston.
KRAKEN: Forward Andre Burakovsky is expected to miss six to eight weeks after being injured in the team’s game over the weekend against the New York Rangers.
The team announced Burakovsky underwent an unspecified procedure to repair an upper-body injury.
Early in the second period Saturday, Burakovsky was hit by Rangers captain Jacob Trouba and crashed into the boards right shoulder first. He got up reaching for his right collarbone, left the ice and did not return, and Trouba was penalized for boarding.
