LEWISTON — YWCA Central Maine has brought back Single Gender Swim, which runs from 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays at 10 East Ave.
Women-identified patrons are offered free, private access to the pool for exercise, community connection, and water safety opportunities. A program instructor is available to provide swimming tips and guide those who are looking to increase their swimming and water safety skills.
The program is designed specifically for women and girls (15 and older) who may require or prefer privacy for religious, safety, cultural or any other reason. Only women and girls are allowed in the pool or locker rooms, including lifeguards and instructors. Patrons are encouraged to wear the clothing that they are most comfortable in in the pool, according to a news release from the YWCA.
“YWCA Central Maine provides services and programs for women, children, and families centered on our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” said Chief Program and Impact Officer Amanda Hatch. “Vital to this work is prioritizing the health, safety and well-being of those most impacted by limited opportunities due to racism and xenophobia. This program aims to reduce intergenerational fear of drowning and increase lifesaving safety skills in our community by providing a safe and culturally appropriate space to enjoy, explore, and learn about the water.”
The program is free, but registration is required at ywcamaine.recdesk.com.
