ARLINGTON, Texas — Corey Seager homered for the eighth time in eight games, Dane Dunning threw five scoreless innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game rematch of last year’s World Series.

The Diamondbacks intentionally walked Seager with two outs and an open base in the third after the Rangers had taken a 1-0 lead on Jonah Heim’s RBI double.

When Seager came up with a runner on and two outs in the fifth, the World Series MVP lined the first pitch he saw into the right-field seats to make it 4-0.

That was pretty much a replay of the series opener Tuesday night, when Seager was given a free pass with two outs in the third, then hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth for the final runs in a 4-2 victory.

Reigning World Series champion Texas (27-29) won its third game in a row since losing five consecutive series. The Diamondbacks (25-30) have lost seven of their last 11 games.

Texas played its first game in more than two years without Marcus Semien in the lineup. The leadoff-hitting second basemen ended his streak of 349 consecutive games since May 13, 2022, after playing banged up and still sore from an outfield collision May 18 with right fielder Adolis García.

TIGERS-PIRATES SPLIT: Paul Skenes struck out nine and earned his second career victory and visiting Pittsburgh salvaged a doubleheader split with a 10-2 win over Detroit.

Skenes (2-0), making his fourth major league start, gave up two runs and three hits in six innings. Skenes has 30 strikeouts in 22 innings and a 2.45 ERA.

Andrew McCutchen had a three-run homer in the third inning for his 1,600th career hit. McCutchen had three hits and a walk, driving in four runs. Nick Gonzales also had three hits, including a solo homer.

In the opener, Matt Vierling hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for a second straight game and Detroit won 8-0.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 3: Matt Carpenter hit a go-ahead home in the third inning, Nolan Gorman also went deep and visiting St. Louis reached .500 for the first time in six weeks by beating Cincinnati.

Carpenter hit his first home run for the Cardinals since April 30, 2021, as St. Louis (27-27) won for the 12th time in 15 games. The Cardinals had not been at .500 since they were 9-9 before play on April 17 and they had dropped to 15-24 before their turnaround. They have won five straight series.

PHILLIES 6, GIANTS 1: Nick Castellanos had a two-run homer among his three hits, Cristopher Sánchez struck out seven in six scoreless innings and visiting Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak.

Castellanos added a double and a single as Philadelphia avoided a series sweep and ended a nine-game losing streak at Oracle Park.

Kyle Schwarber hit his 36th career leadoff homer and his fifth this season and also added an RBI single in the eighth.

MARLINS 9, PADRES 1: Josh Bell had three hits and scored twice and Miami won at San Diego to avoid a sweep.

Jesús Sánchez hit a solo homer and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had two hits and drove in two runs as the Marlins had a season-high 16 hits and snapped the Padres’ three-game winning streak. The Padres dropped to 13-19 at home.

DODGERS 10, METS 3: Shohei Ohtani homered and drove in three runs, Will Smith went deep twice and Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep at New York.

Smith’s second homer was a tie-breaking solo shot off Adam Ottavino (1-2) to start a six-run eighth inning capped by Ohtani’s two-run drive. Miguel Vargas blooped a two-run double, and Miguel Rojas bounced an RBI single over a drawn-in infield during the latest meltdown by a dreadful Mets bullpen.

New York has lost 10 of 12 and 15 of 19.

• Struggling Mets closer Edwin Díaz was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. … 1B Pete Alonso exited in the first inning after getting hit on the right hand by a 93 mph fastball from Paxton. The Mets said Alonso would undergo imaging.

•  Jorge López will be cut by the Mets after the reliever threw his cap on the ground and glove into the stands following his ejection Wednesday at Citi Field.

Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza called the outburst “not acceptable” and said it would be handled internally. López expressed no remorse for his display.

“I don’t regret it,” he said. “I’m the way I am.”

López gave up a two-run homer to Ohtani late in New York’s 10-3 loss. Moments later, the right-hander was ejected for shouting at third base umpire Ramon De Jesus over an appeal ruling on Freddie Freeman’s checked swing.

López pointed at De Jesus and yelled some more, then dropped the ball and walked off the mound. He tossed his cap to the dirt just in front of the Mets’ bench and threw his glove a couple of rows into the stands behind the dugout, where it was snagged by a fan.

Afterward, the Mets began the process of designating López for assignment. They will have seven days to trade or release him, or send him outright to the minors if no other team claims him on waivers.
