Two winners of prestigious educational scholarships were announced during graduation ceremonies at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School on June 8.

Lily Shaffer was awarded the Seasonal Friends of Rangeley Scholarship and Bree Quimby was awarded the Rangeley Lakes Region Legacy Scholarship. Lily will receive a multi-year stipend totaling $10,000, and Bree will receive $2,500.
Both students were recognized for their strong academic records, activity in various school programs and participation in community service, which is a major criterion used in selecting recipients of these scholarships.
Lily has served as vice president of the Interact Club, an organization that works closely with the Rotary Club, which has organized numerous community activities, such as food drives, helping the elderly with yard work and holiday activities for children in the community. Due to her strong academic performance, as well as her active community involvement, Lily was accepted into the National Honor Society. She plans to major in biology with a particular focus on entomology. She believes that college won’t be just a degree for her – she is looking forward to meeting people and experiencing a new community.

Bree Quimby received the Legacy Scholarship, which is supported by permanent residents of the area, and others, and to which contributions may be made in honor or memory of a person, living or dead. Bree has been a dedicated and driven student, resulting in her graduating first in her class and serving as Valedictorian. She is also an accomplished athlete in ski racing and soccer and served as captain for the Maine Ski Team for two years. Her interest in volunteer community activities led to her involvement with the community volunteer organization Interact Club. Bree plans on studying Child Development & Family Relations in college and is looking forward to the “new opportunities and experiences” at a four-year college.
