LEWISTON — City officials notified residents via text Tuesday that a section of Lincoln Street has been closed as Maine Department of Transportation evaluates a bridge for repair.

MaineDOT issued a news release Tuesday afternoon for an emergency closure for Gully Brook Bridge. The bridge, which sits near Gas Light Park between Locust Street and South Avenue, spans a connection between the canal and the Androscoggin River.

The city issued a text alert around 4 p.m. notifying residents that Lincoln Street would be closed between Locust Street and South Avenue as MaineDOT continues its evaluation. The alert urged motorists to seek alternate routes.

“Crews are working to assess the situation,” the MaineDOT release said. “More information will be provided when it becomes available.”

Kevin Gagne, Lewiston’s water and sewer district superintendent, said traffic over the bridge would likely resume Tuesday night after a temporary patch is applied to the bridge.
