100 Years Ago: 1924
On Jan. 1 836, Andrew Johnson put five dollars in the Gardiner Savings Bank for his son, the late George N. Johnson. The son lived his entire life without drawing a penny from or adding to his deposit.
On Jan. 1 of this year the deposit of five dollars, with its accumulations, amounted to $353.08, a gain of 7,000 percent, or an average of 80 percent a year. It is now rolling up at the rate of 300 per cent a year.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Lewiston police detectives have recovered a large part of an Avon bottle collection reported stolen from Patrick Frechette of 139 Oak Street earlier this month. Detective Laurent F. Gilbert said the total collection of 400 bottles is worth $1,980. About $1,800 worth of bottles were recovered.
25 Years Ago: 1999
Former employees of the Carleton Woolen Mills, Inc. in Auburn are suing the parent company, Allied Textiles Companies for more than $9 million dollars in unpaid severance packages.
