AUBURN — The Maine Afterschool Network, in collaboration with the Afterschool Alliance, the Maine Department of Education 21 Century Community Learning Center and L/A Arts will present the 12th annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 20, in Festival Plaza.

Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide celebration of the afterschool programs that keep children safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

The cities of Lewiston and Auburn have signed on as the statewide hosts for the event. Afterschool programs statewide will participate, setting up interactive display tables that present information about their organization while demonstrating the work they provide for youth.

Examples of interactive exhibits include the creation of a large community mural, along with art creation from recycled products and face painting. The celebration will incorporates program staff and participants, government officials and supporters from the public, and approximately 200-300 youth are expected to be present.

The official event will begin at 3:30 p.m., with the opening proclamation to be read by the mayors of Lewiston and Auburn at 4. Performances will follow the opening remarks. Free refreshments will be provided.

After the celebration, a film, “Race to Nowhere,” will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Lewiston Public Library. The screening is part of the fall 2011 Back To School Campaign, an effort to ignite conversation and shift the nation’s thinking about education, achievement and success.
