DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the 13th year, Boy Scout Troop 121 will pick up Christmas trees in Lewiston and Auburn.

While the cities provide locations for free tree disposal, they no longer collect the trees at curbside. For a minimum donation of $5, the Scouts will pick up Christmas trees on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Sunday, Jan. 5. For safety reasons, the trees should not be placed curbside until the morning of Jan. 4.

Money raised by the program goes directly to fund troop scouting activities. Troop 121 was created to help give youth with special physical, mental and emotional challenges the opportunity for success in a safe scouting environment that builds character, encourages citizenship, teaches life skills, and develops personal fitness.

To make a pickup request, send a donation by Jan. 4 to Troop 121, United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave., Auburn, ME 04210. The troop, in turn, will send a tag to place on the tree when it is placed curbside. For more information, please call 783-0790. – Donald, no town

ANSWER: I’m so glad the Scouts will be out and about once again collecting those trees at the perfect time.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I hope someone out in our readership area can help me out. A few years back there was a museum set up in one of the mills in Lewiston honoring Bates Mill and their products, even highlighting some of their work. It just so happens that I have one of their rarer blankets with a rock and roll theme.

I would like to donate it since the blanket is in pretty good condition but I don’t know where to begin. We will be on the lookout for any assistance coming through your Sun Spots column.—No name, no town

ANSWER: Go to https://mainemill.org/ where you can read all about the Maine Mill. The museum holds both permanent and temporary collections. The textile collection includes artifacts found in the deserted mills of Lewiston and Auburn, salvaged on their way to the dump, or donated by former textile workers and their families. The collection consists of both modern and vintage locally produced textiles, machinery involved in local production, personal items and tools owned by the millworkers, and photographs of millwork and social life.

You can then contact the museum at [email protected] or call 333-3881 to inquire about donating your blanket. The museum’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
