Numerous dilapidated buildings on the banks of the Androscoggin River off Avon Street in Lewiston, as seen from the Auburn side Friday afternoon, have been demolished at the former Pineland Lumber Company site. Saxon Partners owns the property and had planned to develop the area into an apartment complex, but did not go through with the project. According to Lewiston’s Economic & Community Development director, Nate Libby, “they are still interested in moving the development forward to construction but are trying to secure financing. They are also open to selling the land and plans to an entity that is interested in developing it. The TIF for the development has expired before any tax reimbursement was made, but I expect the council to be open to considering renewal of the TIF to the current owner or a future owner/developer.” Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal
