WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society will host its annual meeting and the first program offering of the season on Thursday, June 19, at the society’s historic Old Town House Museum, 647 Waterford Road, Waterford – next to Keoka Lake Public Beach. The annual meeting will begin at 6:30, followed by a presentation highlighting the history of Waterford and the state government.
The featured speaker of the evening will be a lifetime public servant and Waterford favorite son, Sawin Millett. Born in Waterford, Mr. Millett enjoyed a long career as an educator, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, and ultimately as Maine Commissioner of Education. He was a member of the Waterford Select Board from 1987-1995, Commissioner of Administrative and Financial Services from 2011-2014, and served nine terms in the Maine House of Representatives. Upon retirement to his Waterford farm in 2024, Mr. Millett was recognized for his service by a joint resolution of the Maine state legislature.
Mr. Millet’s comments will reflect his broad perspective of Waterford and the state government. The presentation marks the first of a series of events organized by the Waterford Historical Society and offered monthly through November. This and all WHS events are free, and the public is enthusiastically invited to attend. A complete schedule of events and further information about the WHS are available at waterfordme.org or on the “Waterford Maine Historical Society” page on Facebook.
