LEWISTON — City officials will be looking to community participation and guidance from a community advisory committee in its national search for a new police chief, according to a statement Monday.
City administrator Bryan Kaenrath said a transparent search will involve a public forum later this month and a five-person search committee. The committee will include a Lewiston schools representative, someone with law enforcement background, two members of the public “reflective of the city’s diverse population” and Kaenrath in his official capacity.
The city administrator officially appoints the new chief.
The advisory search committee will help review applications and will provide feedback throughout the process, the city’s news release said.
“As we look ahead, we intend to cast a wide net — across the country, throughout the state and here in Lewiston — to find a leader who will bring integrity, compassion, and sound judgment to the role,” said Kaenrath. “One who can further strengthen the trust between the department and the community.”
The search comes after current Chief David St. Pierre announced his September retirement earlier this month after 33 years in Lewiston’s police department.
“As Chief St. Pierre concludes his tenure, we are committed to selecting a chief who can continue advancing the department’s work and continue strengthening its role in serving Lewiston,” Kaenrath said.
The community input session has been scheduled for 5 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the city council chambers of City Hall at 27 Pine St. The session will be streamed live on the city’s YouTube channel, http://youtube.com/@cityoflewistonme9586.
