The Rangeley Friends of the Arts is hosting an exhibit celebrating artist Sonja Johnson’s exploration of the color blue, entitled, “Feelin’ the Blues” at the Lakeside Contemporary Art Gallery, located in the lobby of the RFA Lakeside Theater 2493 Main St., Rangeley, through Sept. 10. The show is comprised of paintings, mixed media and cyanotypes.

ADULT RESPITE CARE

The Adult Respite Care Program, called HARC (HELP ADULT RESPITE CARE), is a service that provides needed relief for caregivers of cognitively challenged seniors. The program has activities designed specifically to enrich the participants’ daily lives based on their capabilities, experience, interests and personality. This service is open Wednesdays 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., and is located at the lower level of Rangeley Family Medicine, 42 Dallas Hill Rd., and includes lunch and a snack. This program is sponsored by HELP (Helping Elders Live in Place), a program of Rangeley Health and Wellness. For more information, contact Kathy Hewins at (207)864-4397 option 6.

CHURCH SERVICES

Services will be held at the Oquossoc Union Church, also known as the Log Church, Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., through August 31. The theme for this summer’s series is “The Water of Life – Jesus Christ.” Pastor Tony MacNaughton will bring an uplifting message on this theme each Sunday, and also a special message for the children. Talented musicians will provide special music. Join us on Sunday mornings at this historic church in Oquossoc. Bring your friends and family.

FARMERS MARKETS

Farmers markets are open for the season! In Rangeley, visit the South Shore Drive Farmers Market on Tuesdays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The market is held in the lot at the corner of Route 17 and South Shore Drive. The Downtown Farmers Market is held in the Depot Street parking lot on Thursdays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Phillips Farmers Market is held at the Phillips Area Community Center on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

FESTIVALS

Calling all hikers and outdoor enthusiasts! Rangeley’s Trail Town Festival on Saturday, Aug. 30 is a celebration of the hiking community. From the region’s extensive trail network to the Appalachian Trail crossing Saddleback’s ridge, Rangeley has something for everyone. The festival will take place on Pond Street 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with vendors, guest speakers, music, trail angel hospitality, ice cream eating contest and more.

FOOD

Rangeley Food Bank welcomes all to stop by every Tuesday 10 a.m. – 12 noon at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2614 Main St. We’ve got lots of good food to fill you up.

HISTORY

Explore the history of Rangeley on foot with a knowledgeable tour guide on Saturday, Aug. 30, weather permitting. The one-hour tours offer a unique perspective on the region’s past, allowing you to discover the sites of the region’s earliest buildings and businesses in downtown Rangeley. Explore images from the Historic Rangeley collections and transport yourself back in time to the region’s Gilded Age, all while getting some exercise and exploring charming village neighborhoods. The tour is approximately one mile round trip and departs from the Rangeley History Museum at 11 a.m. $5 for non-members/Free for members and children 18 and under. Tours are limited to 10 individuals, so please arrive early to reserve your space. Well-behaved dogs welcome!

LIBRARY

The Rangeley Public Library, 7 Lake St., is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Rangeley Public Library will host Tim Flight of Western Maine Audubon on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. He will present a collection of fascinating facts about “common” Maine birds, highlighting their unique behaviors, adaptations, and abilities. From the incredible migration of our local Blackpoll Warblers to the facial recognition skills of the American Crow, each bird is showcased with intriguing, sometimes amusing, details. The talk also touches on the impact of human activities on birds, such as the importance of turning off lights at night for migratory birds. MAHJONG

Mahjong at the Barn will held at the Rangeley Congregational Church Barn, 2 High Street,  1st and 3rd  Mondays of the month.  This gathering is for beginners and experienced players as well.  It is the perfect opportunity to learn the game.  Email Ann Franklin at [email protected].

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Open Big Book meeting is held Fridays, 7 – 8 p.m. at the Madrid Historical Society Schoolhouse on Schoolhouse Road in Madrid Township.

THRIFT SHOPPE

The Church of the Good Shepherd Thrift Shoppe, 2614 Main Street, is open Friday and Saturday mornings 9 a.m. to noon. It is a place that is shopped by local folks, winter and summer folks, and the Rangeley Friends of the Arts searching for costumes and set decorations. The bargains are amazing and the range of goods diverse. Proceeds from our Shoppe support the operating costs of Good Shepherd and contributes to local, national and international agencies that provide for the poor and needy of the world. The Thrift Shoppe accepts donations of gently worn clothing, jewelry, accessories and household items. (No televisions, large electronics or furniture, please. See full list of items that can not be accepted in the Undercroft) Donations may be dropped off at the Undercroft anytime during the day or evening.

VOLUNTEER

Labor Day weekend may signal the official end of summer, but for the Rangeley Alumni Association it means it is time for a yard sale. Mark your calendar to visit the alumni yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 30, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., 2632 Main St., Rangeley. The annual sale features furniture, household goods, holiday décor, sporting equipment and toys. Buyers name the fair price for most items offered, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the association’s scholarship fund.
