My father lived in Maine his whole life. He loved to hunt and fish, and he owned several firearms. Being a responsible individual, he knew how to maintain and keep them safe from others. Ironically, our family lived near Lewiston, where the 2023 mass shooting occurred. My dad would have been horrified — not only because violence was perpetrated upon innocent people, but also because a compromised individual had access to firearms to carry out that violence.

By voting “Yes” on Question 2, the November ballot question that asks Mainers to approve an Extreme Risk Protection Order (red flag law), families and police would be able to petition courts to temporarily remove dangerous weapons from persons posing a significant danger to themselves or others.

My dad would have approved of this lifesaving piece of legislation, legislation that helps restore Maine to being the safe, nonviolent place we deserve.
