Leavitt showed off a multipronged rushing attack in its 50-8 season-opening football victory over Hampden Academy on Friday in Turner.
Mason Henderson opened Leavitt’s (1-0) season with a pair of first-quarter touchdown runs. Nathan Karkos added two TD runs, and Randan Hutchinson, Brody Poland and Cayden Bubier each ran in a score.
Poland and Henderson each had an interception on defense. The Hornets’ new starting quarterback, sophomore Landon Marquis, completed 8 of 10 passes for 85 yards.
The Broncos’ (0-1) score came on a long pass over the top by Gavin Monyok to Julian McEwen that went for 66 yards in the third quarter.
PORTLAND 21, OXFORD HILLS 7: Alex Martin returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown late in the first half, then set up the go-ahead touchdown with a 29-yard reception in the third quarter as Portland opened its football season with a win over Oxford Hills at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
The clash between schools that have won two of the past three Class A state championships was scoreless until the closing seconds of the second quarter, when Martin anticipated a pass toward the sideline, stepped in front of the intended receiver and raced untouched to the end zone.
Oxford Hills tied it midway through the third quarter on a 16-yard burst up the middle by Cam Roy. But Portland responded with a touchdown drive of its own, keyed by a pass over the middle from Cordell Jones to Martin, who was tackled at the 1. Jones plunged in on the next play.
The Bulldogs clinched the victory when Alex McKusick scored on a 10-yard run with 5:32 remaining.
FREEPORT 31, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 14: The showdown of Falcons was won on the ground. Sam Willard ran for three touchdowns as the Freeport Falcons rumbled past the Mountain Valley Falcons during a season opener in Rumford.
Willard scored from 6, 5 and 3 yards out. Andrew Thomas added a 25-yard TD run for Freeport (1-0)
Mountain Valley’s (0-1) Blake Small tossed two touchdown passes, a 10-yarder to Dylan Theriault and a 62-yard connection with Diquari Thompson.
