HARRISON — Sixty-six children registered for the Harrison Recreation Department third annual Youth and Family Ice Fishing Derby on Feb. 25 and 26.

There was 13 inches of ice on the cove at the head of Long Lake to safely conduct the derby sanctioned by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Organizers said the sanction allowed people who do not hold a fishing license to assist a child or handicapped person participating in the derby.

Along with the children, there were 42 adults and eight parents who registered. The theme was Families Fishing Together.

The event was made possible by the cooperation and support provided by Emily McCabe and MDIF&W’s Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs.

Winners were:

Youth Lifetime Fishing License in open water, Kyle Bean, with two first-place finishes for a 1.2-pound salmon and 0.72-pound white perch and 1.4-pound pickerel.
