PERU — Two controversial articles in the annual town warrant will get hearings Monday at 6 p.m. at the elementary school.
Article 26 asks voters to adopt an ordinance prohibiting town employees from simultaneously hold the office of selectman or Finance Committee member because it creates a conflict of interest.
The ordinance reads: “Town of Peru employees may seek or accept nomination for election to any office in the town government while employed by the town, provided that no person may maintain employment with the town if the person is elected to and accepts a position on the Peru Board of Selectman or Peru Finance Committee.”
Selectman Kathy Hussey serves as secretary to the selectmen, a town employee position. Her brother, Selectman Rick Vaughn, is a town highway worker.
The second article to be discussed Monday night would change the selectmen’s secretary position from appointed to elected for a three-year term and up to 30 hours a week.
It reads: “To see if the town of Peru will vote to adopt an ordinance or warrant article to change the position of Secretary to the Selectmen from a hired position to an elected position with a term of 3 years and with set hours of up to 25 hours per week, no more that 30 hours per week. Salary to be determined by the selectmen.”
The article was initiated by a citizens’ petition.
Voting on the 31 warrant articles will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at the Town Office.
