LEWISTON — The largest segment of registered voters in Maine is not party-affiliated, according to May 2012 voter enrollment figures on file with the Maine Secretary of State’s Office.
Unenrolled voters make up 36.6 percent of all registered voters in Maine.
Of the mainstream political parties, Democrats, at 32.1 percent, have more registered voters going into Tuesday’s primary election than Republicans, at 28 percent. The Green Party has 3.4 percent.
Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo on Friday was reminding voters of the rules for primary voting.
“Only people who are registered voters and enrolled in a political party may vote on Tuesday,” Montejo wrote in a news release. “The only ballot on Tuesday is a state candidate ballot.”
That doesn’t mean you can’t vote if you are unenrolled, but you would have to select a party Tuesday to vote in the primary. However, those already enrolled in political parties cannot switch parties on Tuesday, Montejo wrote.
