WATERFORD — A book signing of “Once Upon A Pony” by Vicki Austin will take place at The Waterford World’s Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21.
Those who already own copies may bring them to be signed. There will be a few black and white copies to purchase; more can be ordered when these run out. A colored copy will be there to view and can be ordered with a paid order and free shipping.
Austin started keeping journals and writing down her horse training experiences for herself many years ago.
In 2010, after having published a poem “Magical Moments on the Trail” for Endurance News (2006), “A Different Sort of Horse” for American Indian Horse News (2006), “Easy Boot Bridge” for “Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover’s Soul ll” (2006) and “Horse Power-Shopping” and “The Little Horrors of Shopping” for “Chicken Soup for the Shopper’s Soul” (2006), a book started taking form in her mind.
When Vicki decided it was time for a life change, she found homes for her two remaining horses, Freezie and Baby. Two months later she realized how much she missed having horses and Baby in particular, having had her since birth most of her 23 years. Baby and Vicki were together once again.
Austin began compiling Baby’s interesting and exciting experiences into a folder and added to it as memories came. She also asked former students and her grandchildren to write little essays for the book, as they were also a part of Baby’s life, adding an element to Baby’s story that could only come from the young.
“Once Upon A Pony” was published in August 2011 by Trafford Publishing Company.
Austin and her husband of 42 years live in Hartford. She and the mare who stars in “Once Upon a Pony” can still be seen riding the Maine backcountry and continue to compete successfully in long distance.
