The first film, “King Corn,” has already been shown in Bethel. It will be shown in the River Valley area at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Rumford Public Library.
Amy Scott, one of the organizers of The Local Food Connection, said “King Corn” is the first of several that will be shown in both Bethel and Rumford prior to the unveiling of a community food assessment survey and event, “Do You Eat?” scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20, at Telstar High School.
“We want to connect the dots to enhance buying power. We are also connecting with the school district,” she said.
“King Corn,” a documentary, tells the story of two men who leased an acre of land in Iowa to plant corn. The experience showed where all the corn goes.
“Corn is a huge crop in the United States and it’s turned into all kinds of calories in all kinds of foods,” Scott said.
This is an educational film, she said, to help people better understand the uses of corn.
Participating in the food series is Sandy Witas, of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition.
“We’ve been connecting and brainstorming ideas to what the needs are,” Scott said.
Witas has been critical to the Rumford community garden and distribution of produce to local people.
“We’re pretty focused on health issues and eating fresh food and food grown locally,” Scott said. “It also has environmental and economic benefits.”
Other films in the series are:
“Queen of the Sun,” a documentary about the reduction in the number of honey bees and its impact on food production, will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Bethel Town Office, then at a soon-to-be-set date in Rumford.
Two films will be announced in September for Bethel and Rumford.
“Betting the Farm,” a documentary on Maine’s Own Organic Milk, will also be shown in Bethel and Rumford in October.
Scott said The Local Connection is made up of about 30 people, including the nutrition director for both SAD 44 and RSU 10, Jeanne Lapointe. The group meets monthly at the 4-H Center in Bryant Pond. The next regular meeting is set for Aug. 14.
