PARIS — Selectmen voted Monday night to direct the Policy and Procedure Committee to draft a fireworks ordinance, but disagreed on what the ordinance would cover.

Chairman Sam Elliot said he wanted to see a single-line ordinance barring fireworks use on dry days, when the risk of a wildfire starting is high.

“How about a one-line ordinance that says that you can’t do it in cases of fire danger?” he asked.

Selectman Robert Kirchherr suggested a noise limitation, as fireworks aren’t subject to laws that prohibit loud cars and stereos when they disturb people.

Elliot said he didn’t think that was necessary. “The sound is what it is,” he said.

The ordinance will also set penalties for people who use fireworks on days when fire danger, as set by the National Fire Danger Rating System, is higher than “moderate.”

The board specifically directed the committee to draft an ordinance dealing with fire danger and with penalties for violations.

The ordinance, once written and approved by selectmen, would go to a vote next summer. Any fireworks ordinance would have to be reviewed by the state, according to fire Chief Brad Frost. He said the review process can take 30 to 60 days.

Fireworks became legal in Maine this year. At a July meeting of the Board of Selectmen, police Chief David Verrier said his department had received 30 fireworks complaints since May.
