Sun Journal reporter Lindsay Tice did an outstanding job in her front-page article on towns withdrawing from regional school units (Aug. 26).
Her thoughtful analysis of this complex subject, clearly very well-researched, was balanced and informative with information from many different sources all over the state that is really helpful to anyone considering this important subject — as is happening in multiple towns across Maine right now.
Some towns have actually withdrawn while others, like Andover, are exploring withdrawal.
Andover’s first vote on the subject — to authorize entry into the process of negotiation with SAD 44 — is to be held on Sept. 18. That vote provides simply for the filing of a petition of withdrawal, which initiates the negotiation process that allows the town to explore the options open to it.
The second town vote (held some months after the first vote, if the first vote is successful) is when the town actually decides whether to withdraw.
That second vote happens only after all residents have been informed of the terms negotiated between the town and its SAD, and can then decide for themselves whether withdrawal, as negotiated, is the best course.
Reporter Eileen Adams gave a comprehensive presentation on the information meeting held in Andover recently on this subject. Both articles illustrate the excellence of the Sun Journal’s in-depth state and local reporting, which is vitally important to communities, especially on complex and challenging subjects such as this one, and I commend you for providing it.
