DURHAM — A toddler was hurt at Celestial Farm on Chesley Road on Friday when a seat belt tightened around her neck as she was riding on a piece of farm equipment with her grandmother.
The freak accident occurred at about 3 p.m. as the owner of the farm and her 1-year-old granddaughter were feeding horses, according the Maine Warden Service.
“The child was sitting in the passenger seat, secured in her car seat,” according to a Warden Service news release. “As the utility vehicle was moving slowly, the child was reportedly playing with the excess strap. The strap became entangled around the child’s neck and caught under the rear-tire causing injury.”
Durham Fire and Rescue, as well as Freeport Fire and Rescue paramedics responded. The girl was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries described as nonlife-threatening.
The victim and her grandmother were not identified Friday night. Game Warden Evan Franklin was heading the investigation, with the assistance of Sgt. Tim Spahr and Warden Rick LaFlamme.
