AUBURN — A Lewiston man who spat in the face of a jail guard was sentenced Tuesday to the 49 days he has spent awaiting trial in Androscoggin County Jail.

Randy Doggett, 21, of 207 Oak St. pleaded guilty in Androscoggin County Superior Court to a Class C felony charge of assault on an officer. He was expected to be released later that day.

Doggett was in lockdown at the jail due to a previous incident when corrections officers were collecting laundry, Deputy District Attorney Craig Turner told the judge. Doggett shouted to the guard that he had laundry. When the guard opened Doggett’s door to collect his laundry, Doggett spat in the guard’s face, Turner said.

The guard had to decontaminate himself, Turner said.

Turner said Doggett maintained he meant to spit at someone else, not the jail guard, but concluded a jury might find him guilty of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt if he were to go to trial.

A separate assault charge was dismissed because the victim was unavailable.

Doggett had been a victim in a Lewiston stabbing last year and again earlier this year, according to news reports.
