RUMFORD — Prominent local businessman Ronald J. Theriault, who is accused of assaulting a Canaan man during a fight last week, entered a not-guilty plea with the court Friday by mail from his attorney.
Jarrod S. Crockett of Hanley and Associates in Bethel also requested a jury trial on behalf of Theriault, which means the case will be transferred to Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Theriault, 51, of Pine Street, is charged with assault and disorderly conduct stemming from a fight with Robert N. Gilbert, 54, of Canaan on Oct. 4 at Judy’s Variety on Route 2, according to Rumford police Sgt. Douglas Maifeld.
Gilbert, who was also charged with assault and disorderly conduct, has yet to enter a plea, a deputy clerk at 11th District Court said Friday.
Both men were scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 4 in the Rumford court.
