RUMFORD — Two Dixfield men were arrested Thursday night in connection with a pellet gun shooting spree that left 45 property owners in eight towns with more than $10,000 damage, police said.

Rumford Sgt. James Bernard said KC L. Moro, 24, and Casey M. Child, 19,  were arrested Thursday at the Rumford Police Department on felony charges of aggravated criminal mischief.

Moro and Child were transported to the Oxford County Jail in Paris after failing to post the $3,000 cash bail. They are scheduled to appear in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris on Dec. 14.

Police agencies from Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield began responding Wednesday to several criminal mischief complaints of vehicle, business and residential windows being shot out with what appeared to be a BB gun, according to the Rumford Police Department.

Throughout Wednesday and into Thursday, police agencies reported more than 45 victims of the shooting spree, with a total of more than $10,000 damage.

One victim was Dixfield resident Mike Matthews, who said his 1984 Honda CRX, a car “ahead of its time because of its gas mileage,” had its driver’s side window shot out and its windshield cracked.

“I put a lot of money into that car and it’s frustrating that somebody can come along and leave so many people out hundreds of dollars,” he said.

Matthews said dozens of people called him from towns in the area saying they had similar damage to property.

“People’s stores were hit, their cars, even private property belonging to the town. It’s a shame,” Matthews said.

In all, eight towns were reportedly affected by the shootings, including Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Greenwood, Woodstock, West Paris and Hanover.

Mexico Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said that department received 13 complaints connected with the shootings.

Bernard said as Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield officers and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office deputies interviewed victims and watched video surveillance from businesses, they were able to identify Moro and Child. He said the case will remain a multi-jurisdictional investigation and other charges against Moro and Child are anticipated. 

Moro is currently on probation for property crimes. Probation and Parole has authorized a probation hold and are seeking a probation revocation.
