OXFORD — The offseason of dramatic changes at Oxford Plains Speedway continues.

OPS posted its 2013 schedule Saturday with one significant deviation from the norm for longtime fans: The speedway will move its regular weekly racing program from Saturday to Friday night.

The move is not unprecedented, locally or in the region.

Weekly racing at Oxford was held on Fridays from 1994 to ’96. Wiscasset Speedway also operated on a Friday schedule in the early 1980s. Lee USA Speedway in New Hampshire has competed on Friday for many years.

Oxford will be under new management when the gates open. Tom Mayberry of Naples purchased the speedway from Bill Ryan in October.

That new regime is evident in two other elements of the schedule that were previously announced.

OPS will open Sunday, April 21 — almost a month earlier than the recent years of Ryan’s administration — for a Pro All Stars Series race.

And the 40th annual TD Bank 250 is scheduled for Sunday, July 21. That race will be run under open rules to permit both late model cars and PASS-style super late models to compete, ending a seven-year moratorium on the latter machines.

Mayberry is the longtime promoter of PASS.

The speedway also announced that the Valenti Modified Series will return on the eve of the 250. That division last competed at Oxford in 2010.

Oxford will host three Sunday afternoon racing programs, including the season opener, before moving to its Friday format on May 17.

Sunday races will start at 2 p.m. Friday shows get the green flag at 7:15 p.m.

The midweek Acceleration Series opens on Wednesday, June 5 and continues on that night throughout the summer.

With the early start, Oxford will tackle its most ambitious schedule in nearly a decade. The preliminary docket includes 19 Championship events and 12 Acceleration dates.

Fans of Enduro racing will find four Motor Mayhem events, all scheduled on Saturdays.

OPS will host a two-day Monster Truck Extravaganza on the weekend of August 17-18.

Weekly racing will conclude with championship day on Sunday, Sept. 8. PASS presents its championship event at Oxford on Saturday, Sept. 28.
