FRYEBURG — A local man faces several charges after Fryeburg police say he nearly ran over an officer before leading him on a high-speed chase into New Hampshire.

Derek Goode, 28, of Lovewell Pond Road was arrested Tuesday night on charges of reckless conduct, failure to stop for an officer, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest, operating without a license, criminal mischief and two counts of violation of condition of release.

According to an affidavit by Officer Thomas Hundley of the Fryeburg Police Department, Hundley was driving to work Tuesday night when a car began tailgating him and made an aggressive pass. Hundley wrote that when the car was passing him, he recognized the driver as Goode. He said he recognized his female passenger, too, and knew Goode’s bail conditions barred Goode from contact with her.

Hundley wrote that Goode cut in front of his car so sharply he had to swerve right to avoid a collision and went partially off the road. He said Goode then jacked the brakes so Hundley almost rear-ended Goode’s car.

When Goode stopped at a stop sign at Ice House Road and Pine Street, Hundley pulled his car in front of Goode’s, got out, and identified himself as as Fryeburg police officer.

According to Hundley, Goode refused to roll down his window then backed up quickly and drove forward, forcing Hundley to jump out of the way both times. He said he followed Goode at a safe distance while reporting what was happening to Oxford County dispatchers.

Hundley’s affidavit said Goode was “swerving all over the roads and taking up both lanes. He was blowing through stop signs and intersections at a high rate of speed.”

Hundley followed Goode’s car onto Main Street, where Goode crossed the state line and pulled over at the State Line Store in Conway, N.H.

Goode left the car and stood by the store but wouldn’t submit to arrest, Hundley wrote. The officer held Goode at gunpoint until Fryeburg police Officer Michelle Legare arrived.

Hundley wrote that Goode continued to resist arrest, trying to stop police from handcuffing him and trying to run after he was handcuffed. Hundley chased Goode and, after a struggle, Hundley brought him back to the police cruiser. He said Goode kicked the cruiser and dented the fender.

Once Goode was in the car, Hundley called Fryeburg Police Chief Philip Weymouth, who advised him to contact the on-call district attorney, who was Assistant District Attorney Andrew Matulis. Hundley wrote that Matulis told him that because the crimes were in Maine, and because he pursued him just over the state line, that he could legally bring Goode back to Maine.

On Wednesday afternoon, Goode was being held at the Oxford County Jail in Paris on $2,500 cash bail.
