It is not uncommon to see Jeff Ramich with his phone in hand.

For any athletic administrator, a phone is standard equipment. Managing athletic teams and events is a constant process.

But Ramich, Leavitt Area High School’s athletic administrator, is also spending some of that phone time on Facebook and Twitter. He’s a regular on both sites and quite often, he’s posting scores from Leavitt’s athletic events.

“Now-a-days, that’s how you get your information out there,”Ramich said. “After a Friday afternoon, I’ll punch in a field hockey score. Then, later that night, if we’re hosting a football game, I’ll punch in a football score.”

Ramich was even asked to post regular updates from Lisbon’s homecoming football game this year. Being a Lisbon graduate and former administrator there, he still has ties to the community, and a son at the school.

“I was in the end zone at Lisbon High School and at the end of every quarter or maybe during the quarter, I’d tweet the score and what happened,” Ramich said.

Ramich got involved in Facebook when his daughter was in high school and son was in middle school. It was a good way to follow along with his kids’ lives, but he also discovered it was a good way to communicate athletic information.

“It was a great way to get information out,” Ramich said. “We’re going to have a fall sports banquet, here’s the date and the time and the location. Then it’s out there.”

He’s a regular on social media as Leavitt’s AD, as well. If you’re looking for an announcement or a score about a Leavitt athletic event, Ramich is likely posting it.

Though he uses social media often, he is also very cautious about  its ramifications.

“You’ve got to be careful about what information you do put out,” he said. “If I put out a recap of a game, I’m going to be very positive. I’m not going to be judgemental at all.”

At Leavitt, school policy recommends that staff do not “friend” students on Facebook. Ramich has not “friended” any students, but admits there can be exceptions. He has students who are friends from when he was at Lisbon. In many cases, he knows the family.

On Twitter he has more followers than he does people he follows.

“There are people that are following me from Leavitt, but I’m not following them,” said Ramich. “They follow me because I’m giving them information about games.”
