AUBURN —  There were two things the Leavitt/Edward Little girls’ hockey team had in its favor Wednesday night.

The Red Hornets had depth, and they had Taylor Landry.

Landry scored six goals and helped lead her team to a convincing 12-1 win over St. Dom’s. The Saints only had 10 skaters, and it showed in the final two periods.

“We looked at their bench, and I told the girls coming in that they’re a dangerous team,” Red Hornets coach Shon Collins said. “You saw early in the game when they had the legs and they were playing right with us. It was a matter of time that we’d wear them down later in the game.”

After building a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Red Hornets broke things open with six goals in the second. Five of them came in the final 2:20.

“We started playing better in the second period,” said Landry, who had four of the first eight goals for the Red Hornets. “The first period was a little shaky. Then we started clicking and getting our passes together.”

In addition to Landry’s six goals, Shelbea Russell had two goals and three assists. Shaylin Collins scored a goal and assisted on two.  Danica Nadeau added a goal and an assist while Kristina Latlippe and Abby Roy scored as well. Kayla McLellan had the lone goal for the Saints (0-3).

“We’re progressing in each win,” Collins said. “I’ve seen growth out of the girls. I’m really excited about it, but we’ve got a lot of season left.”

Leavitt/Edward Little (4-0) thought it had potential to start the year, but to see it showing on the ice is exciting in this young season.

“I thought we could be (4-0),” said Landry, whose team plays Lewiston on Saturday. “We’re playing really good as a team. It’s been a good start. We’re all clicking.”

Russell set up Landry on both goals in the first period against the Saints. The first came on a shot from the point. The second was a wrap-around by Landry on the power play.

With 6:48 left in the second, Landry burst up the right side for a tally to make it 3-0. Then the Red Hornets blew it open with five goals to end the period. Landry made it 4-0 on a breakaway on the power play with 2:20 left.

Then Nadeau, Russell, Latlippe and Landry all scored in the final 1:56.

“We went in with an open mind because last year they beat us in the second game,” said Landry, who now has 18 goals this season. “So we wanted to get a little bit of revenge on them. So we came out and played our best and it worked out.”

Collins made it 9-0 with a goal at 7:31. Then McLellan scored on a Jessica Boulet pass with 5:18 left in the game.

Abby Roy, Landry and Russell all scored in the final minutes to complete the scoring.

“A lot of girls’ contributed tonight,” Collins said. “(Landry) is one of the top players in the state. We’ve seen it the last three games. But the other girls contribute to make things happen. Even if she’s the one finishing, the other girls are helping.”
