MEXICO — An alternative heating system for the Region 9 School of Applied Technology is being considered for the coming year, the board’s Facilities Committee said Wednesday night.

Committee Chairman Norm Clanton said eight companies made presentations last week on wind, solar, natural gas and wood pellet systems. All but one are in Maine.

The board hopes to identify the most energy efficient and economical system to replace the oil burners within the next year.

The school has paid nearly $52,000 for oil in 2011, and $47,000 in 2012.

Clanton said a thorough report will likely be presented at February’s board meeting. A recommendation may also be made.

Director Brenda Gammon said if an alternative heating system is found appropriate, it may not be required to go before residents for a vote, depending on the cost.

Also on Wednesday, the board appointed an ad hoc committee to study the school’s sick bank policy. Serving will be board members Frank DiConzo and Kevin Kaulback, Gammon, and two staff members to be appointed by Gammon.

The board also continued its focus on learning more about each of the vocational programs offered at the school. Lloyd Williams, the building trades instructor, and Ruth Brown, the computer technology instructor, made presentations Wednesday.

Their purpose is to better inform the board of specific programs and more fully understand budgetary needs. The series of presentations will culminate Feb. 6 when the board will spend the day visiting each vocational class.

Brown said the second year computer class has designed a 12-month calendar featuring photographs from each of the vocational programs. The calendar cost is $15 and will soon be available through the school. Proceeds go toward student scholarships.

Anyone interested in purchasing a calendar may contact the school at 364-3764.

The next board meeting is Jan. 9, 2013.
