Monmouth Academy National Honor Society student Emily Vancio, 16, right, loads up boxes for needy community families with potatoes, celery and carrots, as another NHS student, Kayla Frost, 17, double-checks her master list to make sure all the food is accounted for Wednesday. “For a small community, we are blessed that we take care of our own,” said Laurie Gifford, coordinator of the Cottrell-Taylor Christmas Baskets. “Each family receives two boxes of food, which is an entire holiday dinner, and we hope they have leftovers to get them through.” Along with the food, any referred family with children under the age of 18 will also receive wrapped Christmas gifts. Henry Cottrell started the baskets 44 years ago with one family. This year, Gifford is planning to distribute baskets to 65 families, including a few senior citizens.
