1937 – 2012
NEW GLOUCESTER — Elaine W. Verrill, 75, of Lewiston Road, passed away, Dec. 21, at her home, after a long battle with cancer. As she requested, her family was by her side when the Lord called her home.
She was born on April, 19, 1937, in Gray, and attended Gray schools and graduated from Pennell Institute. She was the daughter of the late Adaline and Irving Whitney.
She enthusiastically served her community, as well as surrounding cities and towns as a member of the New Gloucester Fire/Rescue team for 38 years. In 1998, the New Gloucester Town Report was dedicated to her. She was selected for the tireless hours that she gave to the Fire Rescue. She responded to more calls than any other member of the team. She joined the Fire Rescue in 1974. In 1989 to current, she held the office of senior lieutenant. She enjoyed most of all spending time with her family. Cooking, gardening, knitting and the Boston Red Sox were also among her favorites. For 20 plus years she was a caretaker for a retired rear admiral that lived to the age of 105, longest living Annapolis graduate. She and her husband owned and operated, solely, “Will and Lainey’s Farm Stand,” for 15 years.
She leaves behind Willis, her husband of 57 years; a brother, Roscoe; and her children, Susan Hall (Richard), Debbie Hodgman (Scott), Cindy Hurdle (Mike), Lori Bilter (Al), Charlie (predeceased by Diane Boulanger, daughter-in-law), and Dennis. She also leaves 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Beside her parents; she was predeceased by her brothers, Peter and Carl Whitney.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Androscoggin Home Hospice for their care.
