AUBURN — Sons of the American Legion in Auburn came out to support their teams in the Super Bowl and raise money for the Veterans Home in South Paris on Sunday.
Legion members and their families began setting up the hall at the William J. Rogers Post 153 at 4 p.m. for their 10th annual Super Bowl pre-game gathering and potluck dinner.
According to Commander Tim Ricker, a 20-year member, donations received will be earmarked for the South Paris Veterans Home.
“It’s one of the best veterans programs going.” Ricker said the money will help fund entertainment for residents.
Ricker said that in the past, the post has been responsible for sending supplies, including DVDs and CDs, to troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The post, with about 680 members between the Legion, Auxillary, Sons of the Legion and Legion Riders, regularly schedules fundraising events to support the community.
Wearing his New England Patriots football helmet and jersey, public relations officer Paul Bernard pointed to a picture of a 1947 American Legion football team demonstrating the American Legion’s longstanding tradition in sports.
13-year-old Justin Therialut of Auburn sampled some seafood chowder with his family. A San Francisco fan, Theriault lamented he would not be able to see the whole game, but dinner and some pre-game would suffice.
Kevin Chapman, a 20-year member of the Sons of the American Legion and current adjutant and finance officer, is proud of the post’s long history of fundraising.
“It’s all about raising money for whoever needs it,” Chapman said, noting that the post tries to help all nonprofits.
Food, drink and giveaways, including T-shirts, were on tap for the remainder of the game with about 50 people expected to fill the hall.
