LEWISTON — The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (AVSWCD) and Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) have scheduled three workshops with a focus on finding solutions to clam flat closures and restoration.

Funding for the workshops has been received from the New England Grassroots Foundation.

The first will be “Keeping Clam Flats Open: Septic Tank Problems and Solutions,” from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, at the Bath City Hall, Front Street. Should weather require a cancellation, the workshop will be held the following Friday, March 15.

Registration must be received by March 4. Seating is limited.Targeted toward professionals and topics include updates to laws and regulations, alternative septic systems, septic system failure and maintenance, financial assistance programs and coastal water quality.

The agenda can be found at www.androscogginswcd.org. Continuing Education Units for site evaluators and code enforcement officers may be available.

The second workshop will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 29, at the Bath City Hall Auditorium and will focus on “Forestry Practices to Protect Water Quality.”

Plans for a site visit are in the works. A coffee break will be offered and handouts distributed.

The third workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Bath City Hall and will focus on “Farming for Clean Water.”

Both AVSWCD and KELT invite contractors, municipal representatives, media staff, local clam diggers, clam flat wardens and any interested to attend the March 8 workshop, which offers the opportunity to become informed of the problems and solutions to keeping clam flats open.

There will be continental breakfast and handouts. The cost is $6 a person for registrations received up to Thursday, Feb. 21. Feb. 22 through March 4 and later, the cost is $9 a person.
