LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 board Wednesday approved having the annual Spruce Mountain High school junior-senior prom at the Skye Event Center in Lewiston. The date is May 11.

Junior Emily Taylor told the board a majority of students voted for the site, which is in the Promenade Mall on Lisbon Street.

Several board members and parents objected, saying the distance meant prom-goers may be on the roads late at night.

“Getting home at 11 or 12 at night is a lot different than just driving to Lewiston,” parent Bill Calden of Jay said. “I’m opposed to kids going that far.”

Suggestions were made to hold the prom at the high school gym in Livermore Falls, Murray Hall in Jay, or the Jay Community Building.

Superintendent Robert Wall said the district will make a bus available for any students who want to be transported to and from the prom.

Jay board members Dan DiPompo and Darcie Comstock voted against the Lewiston site.

In other business, Livermore representative Cindy Young reported on last week’s meeting of the Facilities Committee. It reviewed 10 applications from architectural firms for the $1.8 million renovation project at the Jay high school, middle school and Community Building.

She said Bunker and Savage Architects of Augusta, Harriman Associates of Auburn and WBRC Architects and Engineers of Bangor will be interviewed Feb. 27. Representatives of the three firms will do a walk-through of the sites with district personnel Feb. 20.

The project is to create space for all 500 high school students from the Jay and Livermore Falls schools in the Jay buildings by this fall.

In other matters on Wednesday, the board:

* Accepted with deep regret the resignation of longtime speech therapist Sheila Smith at Livermore Elementary School;

* Heard a report from acting Principal Chris Hollingsworth of the Jay high school on 32 new or returning courses that may be offered during the next school year;

* Approved an Assistant Principal Search Team to identify candidates for the newly created position of assistant principal/athletic director for Spruce Mountain High School in the fall.
