LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen on Tuesday set a special town meeting for Monday, March 4, for voters to consider withdrawing $80,000 from the town’s fund balance account to cover a Sewer Department overdraft.
The department owes $80,000 to the town’s sewer treatment plant.
The town’s sewer users pay for the sewer system and treatment plant. Jay contributes to the sewer plant operation and maintenance based on how much wastewater from Jay residents is treated at the plant. The formula is currently 54 percent for Jay, 46 percent for Livermore Falls.
The Livermore Falls sewer system serves the downtown and the outskirts of the in-town area. The remainder of residences are on private septic systems.
The special town meeting will be moderated by lawyer Clint Boothby of Livermore. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Office. The maximum capacity for the selectmen’s meeting room is 125 people.
The town’s undesignated fund has $1.12 million in it as of the board’s last meeting on Feb. 4. If voters agree to transfer the $80,000, it will leave about $1.04 million, Town Manager Kristal Flagg has said.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Bill Demaray said the way the warrant article is written would allow voters to adjust the amount to be transferred down but not to increase it.
The $80,000 is expected to help pay for a new bar rack/screen at the treatment plant. The current equipment is not working well, if at all, town representatives have previously said.
The money would also help get the Sewer Department back on track. Selectmen in their capacity as sewer trustees, increased rates by 20 percent in late November 2012, which is also expected to help.
